The Holy Quran was revealed to all humankind as the “complete way of life,” the primary source of guidance for daily life interactions, and the essence of enlightened intellect leading to the straight path of united societies that embrace the universal Quranic values of al-tawhid (affirmation of the oneness of God), al-tazkiyah (purification), and al-umran (development, prosperity, and civilization). As Muslims, we depend on the prophetic hadith to elucidate the Qur`an and guide our interpretation, and thus, application of its verses. The closer Muslims are to the actual implementation of the messages of the Quran and hadith, the more likely they will live in peaceful, united, and cultured societies. As Muslims shift away from the original sources of guidance, however, they are more likely to blunder and impede the development of societies.
The Integration of Knowledge Summer Program is grounded in the methodological and epistemological perceptions of Islamic thought methodology, developed by Dr. Taha Alwani, to reunite students with the original sources of guidance – the Quran and the Sunnah. The program provides students with a unique opportunity to develop an Islamic scientific methodology of thought based on the Qur`an and the Sunnah to reach true knowledge. The program spans four weeks that are carefully designed using a problem-based learning approach to gradually help students advance their critical thinking, reasoning, problem-solving, and research skills.
Students will be immersed in a collaborative learning environment in which they will investigate a contemporary social issue, learn traditional and contemporary Islamic studies, and integrate social and Islamic intellectual heritage to interpret the Qur’an and the Sunnah and extrapolate Qur`anic values and principles. As a result of the program, students will achieve a globalized intellectual capability to develop a research-based framework that guides future analysis and evaluation of daily life issues in light of an Islamic paradigm of knowledge.
